After sticking with one camera for over a decade, switching to anything else was always going to come with a learning curve. What I didn't expect though was what some of those learnings would be!

Short Summary of Key Points

Pros:

* Between a nice new higher-quality standard lens, and new sensor tech (and being FF this time too), images are a lot sharper in general. Especially when shooting landscape stuff (e.g. treelines against sunsets in particular, but also tiny text on small labels on things in frame) are now often very sharp + clear with this setup, whereas it used to be somewhat hit and miss whether the same applied before with my old standard lens setup

* There are now 3 dials on the body that can be used to adjust various things, along with an additional mappable control-ring on the new-generation lenses. As you'd expect, in Full Manual Mode, these dials have been mapped so that the two that used to be present still control shutter speed + aperture as before, with the new one handling ISO - exactly as I'd been wishing for many years.

* New sensor == Higher ISO levels you can use (and with less obvious grain when that happens)

* Auto-focus available during video recording

* Can use EVF for "through the lens" live-view preview of what you're recording during video recording - which is better for situations where holding at arms length to see the LCD was problematic

* Can also choose to use the LCD screen in "pop out" mode out the side, with some angling support available

* A whole bunch of new + more advanced autofocus modes + settings to choose from, along with a wider array of focus points that can be used

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-1255317944562565112024-01-14T21:25:00.005+13:002024-01-14T21:25:39.865+13:00LOL... What a milestone!

On a personal level, I am forever grateful for role that Blender has and continues to play in my life. In many ways, you can say that Blender and I grew up together - right time, right place, all that sort of thing:

From starting out as a kid in his early teens in NZ wanting to make his own animated short films; to starting to put my self-taught programming skills to use tweaking and modifying this software to scratch my own itches; to starting to help the nascent few professional studios starting to use Blender to scratch their itches; and finally, spending the better part of a decade or so fighting hard to propel our favourite open source 3D content creation suite from "just a little hobbyist toy" to "serious film-production ready software on-par with (if not outright superior to) the other much more lauded 'industry standard' software".

I think it's fair to say that we've definitely achieved that goal of becoming one of the new industry standard DCC suites, playing a major role in production pipelines throughout the industry. Everywhere you look, there are people out the using Blender - often in places and ways that you'd least expect!

What a thrilling ride it's been, along with getting to meet some many good lifelong friends along the way!

As you may have noticed, I've been largely absent from active involvement in the Blender world for the past few years. While a return to actively developing and contributing to Blender is not completely off the cards, it is currently highly unlikely. Never say never, but between a fairly heavy workload on a complex + important / critical system in my day-job, some ongoing consulting work on some other projects I've been involved in, and also trying to have a bit more of a life outside of work (I'm trying... old habits die hard), it's unlikely to happen anytime soon.

(Admittedly, it's also been somewhat bittersweet seeing the recent resurgence of interest in Blender's Animation System. Seeing all the active discussion + development of things I would've really loved some feedback on a decade ago when I was actually still actively working on some of these things is fun to see... I just wish it could've happened sooner! Oh well... such is life!)

Happy 30th Birthday Blender!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-73318388102914270222023-12-31T12:30:00.004+13:002023-12-31T17:59:30.837+13:00Year in Review - 2023
And with that, another year is over! Here's a quick rundown of a bunch of key events this year.

If I had to sum up the year, it'd likely have to describe it as: "A tumultuous year of loss, turmoil, and new beginnings"

BIG THINGS

* Started a new job this year - a permanent position at last (!) - in a field I love. Technically, I was returning to the company that I'd been working for prior to the pandemic (but this time, not in a time-limited role), as the major project I'd been working on 3/4 years ago went live at the end of the year.

* Two major projects I've spent the last few years working on "went live / public" this year:

1) The aforementioned big + complex + important system I work on in my current day job

2) TPMS Studio - The software project I'd been working on for a few years has finally been released for public usage.

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-23010943007828750212023-12-31T10:30:00.025+13:002023-12-31T17:46:21.362+13:00Announcing TPMS Studio
"TPMS Studio" is a CAD application I built from the ground up while working as a postdoc at the University of Canterbury for realtime modelling
+ visualisation + direct 3D printing slicing/export for complex
functional engineering assemblies featuring porous microstructures.

* It
runs on the GPU and is supposed to be fully cross-platform (though we can
only really test / support Windows currently).

* It natively supports more than 30 types of "Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces" (including the usual suspects - Gyroid, Diamond, Primitive, IWP, etc) - My personal favourite though is the "Fischer-Kock C(S)" one (*)

* We have the ability to directly export geometry to MSLA / resin
printers, without needing to go through expensive + resolution-limiting
meshing steps through an external slicer?

Also, as you can see
from the video / demoreel below, the UI design of this software is
heavily influenced + infused with Blender UX heritage ;)

TPMS Studio

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-26320623343737446392023-12-19T01:11:00.009+13:002023-12-22T11:51:57.537+13:00Good Good Good - Santa Claus is... I'd drafted a few other versions of this in the past, but this one seems to fit the bill quite nicely (+ got finished), so this will be the one that goes up...

Inspired by this headline, here are some of my current thoughts on these matters:

* Most places reachable in < 10-15 mins, *by any means* == Yes, agree that's the ideal scenario (and is what life was like growing up here in Christchurch NZ). I've found that, especially for anywhere you need to go frequently, having to spend more than > 10 mins each time is quickly quite aggravating + draining.

In that light, the monster 40 min to 2.5 hr commutes that Americans frequently claim they have are therefore quite unfathomable. (Then again, maybe that's why there are so many messed up folk out there doing drugs and alcohol... again, things that never made sense)

* Many places reachable in ~10 min, but ONLY by walking / 2-wheeled contraption (and hailing a cab/Uber is not an option as distance too short for them to bother) == Personal hell. It's an annoying way to live... Grocery shopping is particularly aggravating (as you're limited to the 1-2 small bags you can reliably carry + manage to pack/unpack several times in a hurry)
Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-74388654240528316232023-02-06T12:56:00.000+13:002023-02-06T12:56:05.035+13:00Waitangi
A surprising insight I saw just yesterday for the first time, was when someone referred to Waitangi (aka "founding place of New Zealand in 1840" - see "Treaty of Waitangi" for details) as the "sad water place".

"Sad water place". If you think about it, and break down the meaning of the constituent parts of that name, that's actually what it means. "Wai" = water, "tangi" = a event filled with sadness / mourning for the dead.

Hmm... The more you think about it, the more different meanings you can suddenly read into these things... Oh the things you don't realise until much later - much like song lyrics, and finding old stuff from the past.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-841214914292397942023-02-06T12:49:00.001+13:002023-02-06T12:49:26.432+13:00Thoughts on Plumbing and House Design
The past few months have been an (unwanted) deep dive into the world of household plumbing, and the various issues around it. Here are some things I've learned.

1) Debugging complex legacy plumbing and debugging complex legacy codebases are equally hard

2) At some point, you're going to need to check ALL the pipes

3) Most home designs make access to pipes HARD. Especially new/modern builds!

For example:
- Downpipe inspection panels hidden behind a wall. To access these, you must first drill + cut various wall panels to reveal the pipe, in order to find where the panel sits... then, when all is said and done, you then need to call in a builder, plasterer, and finally painter (complete with multiple rounds of sanding, phone calls, and time away from work/life waiting)

- In contrast, older houses here at least have an underfloor crawl space, that can typically be accessed through some removable panel (similar to manhole covers). That said, in many cases, you end up needing to remove carpet to get to it, which does still mess things up a bit.

4) Some plumbers come better equipped than others. As a result, I've come up with a list of the neatest bits of equipment I've seen that IMO it'd be nice to have on hand, so they can do their jobs easier. (see later)

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-5364076618005517782023-01-31T20:14:00.005+13:002023-01-31T20:14:36.336+13:00Useful AI Wishlist
List of AI things would be actually worthwhile to pursue (instead of some of the junk that goes on):

* Earthquake Prediction. A very very sad moment in time is the most fitting way to describe it.

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-60344487308101880752022-09-09T10:13:00.002+12:002022-09-09T10:14:18.295+12:00On QE II's Passing
London Bridge is Down.

This morning, I awoke to news that Queen Elizabeth II had indeed passed away overnight, bringing to a close an incredible era - spanning the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, man stepping foot on the moon, the invention of the Internet, the birth of yours truly, the founding and rise of Blender, and in recent years, COVID.

Late last night, the news broke that the Queen's health had taken a turn for the worst, and that members of the Royal Family were urgently cancelling appointments and rushing to Scotland. If ever there was a clearer sign that the end was in sight, there could be no mistaking what this all meant. (*1)

Just like on the day I learned that my Grandma had died - again on a regular day in September - I can tell you the piece of code / chunk of functionality I was working on when I first heard the news. In the case of my Grandma, it was the Edit Mode curve vertex selection code - specifically, either the select next/prev, select first/last, or select nth operators. That afternoon, I'd been working on trying to get to the bottom of a series of annoying crashes in my initial implementation of those features. From memory, I think I managed to fix at least one of those, though my memory is a bit hazy now - all I remember is that after receiving the phone call, my hands went cold, and I rather hastily proceeded to quickly wrap off the bit I'd been doing, and shut down my computer.

Last night, I'd instead by trying to get working an "inline popup panel UI" for editing a CSG Node Tree (used to avoid needing switching modes / editing contexts) - my initial attempt of putting this UI in a separate window had turned out to be a massive failure, resulting in a mix of random untraceable crashes (i.e. it was deep in the bowels of the C++ / QML engine perhaps, and not inspectable from my code) and/or more predictable yet still utterly frustrating "polish()" loop errors when the popover panels launched from buttons within that UI would run out of space to be fully displayed without cropping. In the end, I finally resolved to rip out that approach, and all back on putting the whole panel inside a popover panel instead. Doing so would hopefully bypass all the polish() loop and related issues (there was ample window-space to draw in now), at the expense of having a UI formed from nested-popups-upon-popups, and without the ability to reposition + resize those popups (not that the dialog was fully resizeable either for that matter though). In this case though, I did finally manage to get the beast working before clocking out for the night, all the while checking various twitter feeds to check if the inevitable had happened.

While the two events are not really comparable - one was after all the head of state for multiple countries - and regardless of whatever wokey-pokey convictions you may hold about the role of monarchy in the 21st century, I think it's only right and appropriate that we to spend a few moments reflecting on the life and times of one of the world's most loved and respected "grandmas", a stable and ever-present constant pillar in a rapidly changing world.

Thank you for your many decades of service Your Majesty. Rest in Peace.

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-50177482497852983882022-05-21T22:14:00.001+12:002022-05-21T22:14:24.432+12:00Saturday Photowalk - Recent changes around the Arts Centre...
With fine sunny weather today (sandwiched between two days of chilly, showery, wintery weather) it was a great day to get out and about, and away from my desk for a few hours. It ended up being a nice afternoon to take a walk around the Arts Centre for the first time in ages - between the first wave of Omicron, and our very own "Camp Covid" from the rabid "Freedumbs" crowd just around the corner, it's been a while since I've been to this part of town.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I haven't actually tested this on Linux, since most of the Linux users of this program are already doing a lot more coding work and will have dev environments set up anyway, that it doesn't matter for them.

Hopefully this helps someone else someday.

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1978356510587112308.post-76023344199905540362022-02-03T11:23:00.001+13:002022-02-03T11:23:32.274+13:00Musings on Typefaces

It was interesting waking up to a discussion about Garamond this morning, as Garamond was my favourite typeface during my teens.

I'd grown up using Times New Roman (and really quite liking it in general - definitely much more than the Sans Serif fonts that were all the rage back then - Arial, Tahoma, and Verdana IIRC). However, being a teenager, I ended up finding it to look a bit too "plain" and "boring". So when I first discovered Garamond, it was a breath of fresh air - like, here's this elegant and fancy looking font that's like an improved version of what I'd liked for years. While others were veering off into simpleton land with Sans Serif fonts, I would have this fancy font to use instead!

That, and it was way better than the butt ugly Computer Modern font that LaTeX uses by default. Ugh, I hate that thing. The normal weight letters are too thin / light-weight, with and have a weird aspect ratio (narrow + tall). Meanwhile, the serifs on the heading / bolded fonts look so heavy + wide + "baroque" (as in, the original sense - i.e. "grotesque").

Read more »Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
