As I've mentioned a bunch of times on here, ever since the hostile takeover and demise of Twitter a few years ago, I've switched over to Mastodon (+ posting / reposting stuff on here again).
Here's a list of things that I wish that there was a Mastodon UI that did. Unfortunately, the way things are going, it also seems that I'm likely gonna have to implement all this myself in my own client / frontend to get any traction on it...
The Tabs / Feeds I Wish It Would Provide:
* Home = Accounts you follow *only*
* Local = Your Local Instance Timeline
* Followed Hashtags = As the name says. These should only come in here and NOT in Home, as it makes Home rather useless if you ever follow one or two really noisy ones that drown out everyone else (but which offer lots of interesting stuff too)
* Pinned Threads = A view where every column is a separate thread you've pinned, so you can keep an eye on some that you want to revisit later to see the result of some discussion / poll when it closes. (i.e. It'd be like that "Advanced" multi-column / Tweetdeck interface... all the other ones are single-column for nicer mobile access)
Would also have some tabs to group by "monitored threads" vs "to check later" vs "useful / fun stuff to preserve"
* Federated = The Wild Firehose. TBH, I *never* look under there, and would be happy to have the option to just turn it off from my UI completely
(I'd also just drop the "Explore" tab too, but understand that some might like it for people new to Fediverse)
Other UX Things I'd Fix:
* Abstract away all that "going to other server" crap when stuff isn't loaded by your own instance by just bridging over that and manually slurping that data in - client-side - and dealing with it that way
* Same goes for all that following accounts on other servers / liking + boosting those and having it auto-done from your home server without jumping through those cross-site hoops
* Yeah I know there's still some technical gunk that needs to happen, but it's all just missing plumbing that's probably tedious to write but would solve a lot of problems
Critical Shit I'd Fix
* If moving beyond just the web-UI, I'd also just fix the bloody account migration problem to just allow wholesale migration of your own chat history to another server.
* For that argument of: "This might not fit the moderation policies of your new homeserver, hence why we don't allow it" / etc. - I reckon we could get away with just having a flag to indicate: "This post has been imported from another server" (may also with a "Has not been reviewed to comply with our policies yet" flag too), and most people can have a default set to just auto-collapse under a "content-warned" banner.
In the event that objectionable material is uploaded that way and new host instance members object, the mods can then step in to "moderate those posts" in the usual ways.
