Christchurch Rebuilding - Photos from Out and About a Week Later

Over the past two days, I've been gradually venturing out, exploring Christchurch a week after the great earthquake, and taking photos of damage, cordons, and recovery in progress. I've just included some which give a fair impression of the overall situation, though aren't always the best shots I took.

Riccarton Road (Friday 10th, Afternoon) - A major arterial route in the city, passing by one of the largest malls in the region:

The start of the police cordon of a section of Riccarton Road, where falling or unstable buildings being demolished make the road unsafe for traffic to pass.

You've got to commend the construction workers/engineers getting out there, making the city safe again. Without them, many things would not be back up again as efficiently as they were. Thanks again guys!

Colombo Street (Saturday 11th, Morning) - The main street in the central city

This first shot is not strictly Colombo St, but is on Moorhouse Ave instead. However, it is still on the borders of the CBD.

Damaged buildings are abound in the CBD. I haven't yet been able to get to some of the more deeply affected places (such as Manchester and Victoria Streets, where heavily damaged buildings, some demolished, have been reported by the media so far). Some of these are also some of my favourite shots of the day.

Having said that, by and large, the buildings around the Colombo Street in the CBD are not as badly affected as it would have seemed. In fact, most are still standing, and many businesses in the area have begun reopening then doors for trading. Almost everywhere there is life, so I suppose you could say that we are coping quite well in general.

There are more photos that I haven't shown here, that you can see by browsing through the gallery these are grouped in.
