As many in the Blender world will know by know, Flow - a Latvian animated film created by a small team in Blender, and rendered using Eevee just won this year's Oscar for Best Animated Film!
Woah! What a moment! The first Blender animated Best Animated Feature award winner! WOW! 😱🤯😍🥳
A *VERY* big congratulations to all the team who worked on this!!! A very well deserved win!
And now for my comments after watching the film at Lumiere in the Arts Centre here back in January:
~~~
Flow was awesome!
* It was such a lush and immersive experience
* I particularly enjoyed finally getting to sit in a packed screening to watch a film produced using Blender, and seeing the familiar logo show up in the credits!
While it's not the first high quality Blender-animated feature film I've now watched (e.g. "I Lost My Body", and "Next Gen" got there first!), this is the first I've been able to watch in a person in a theater with an audience!
All in all, a very proud moment to see this day come!
~~~
EDIT: For this post, I there were some some additional things I've wanted to mention but hadn't managed to so far, as it didn't fit so well in a microblogging space, and I couldn't quite muster the words in my hurry to share the exciting news with everyone:
* As someone who once also dreamed of one day producing an animated feature film, dialog free and featuring animals using a small team, it was very inspiring see a film like this!
You could almost say it was like one of those, "one of our own just made it big" type moments... almost... in a way... 😜
Except yeah... this bunch of talented young and upcoming creatives are actually leading the way by actually getting the job done! (I still can't quite get over how Gints not only wrote and directed the thing, but ALSO made the soundtrack - and not just enough music to fit the film, but several times over!!!) Woah! That's some serious talent there!
* To not only get to see a well-made Blender animated feature film in a cinema together with my family (AND not just a sparsely attended showing, but one that was rather jam packed)... but to then hear a few weeks later that the same film had gone on to then win the Oscars for Best Animated Film?! In the same year, within weeks of each other?!
That's totally unreal!
And to that end, I have to say, that it's been one hell of a journey to have played a role in laying the foundations for this day to happen! All those years trying my hardest to turn what many regarded for the longest time as a "toy", and from that, expand and refine that the best parts to give the world an animation toolkit to match if not surpass all the big "industry standard" tools that everyone else was using, such that people from everywhere could finally use it make professional-grade animated feature films! And what do you know? That day has now arrived!
TBH, it's an awesome feeling seeing a long held dream come true before your eyes at long last!
And how can we forget? None of this would've been possible without Ton, without whose tireless efforts + vision we would not be here today!
